A brief history of the Island
Long ago, before the tourists arrived, a seafaring tribe known as Chao Nam occupied the coastal areas of Phuket. The Chao Nam were a slight but tough race who were master sailors and could travel easily from place to place. They were believed to have nomadic instincts and set up villages for a certain period of time before moving on. Many of these Chao Nam villages still exist in Phuket today. As for Karon history, the Semang Pygmie tribe that still exist in Malaysia were believed to live in and around Karon. These hunter-gatherers ate fruits from the lush rain forests of the island and shellfish from the coves. It is believed that they travelled from cove to cove feeding on fruit and shell fish, and then after eating all moved on to the next cove. The first Europeans to arrive in Karon, claimed that these pygmies were pirates who robbed, stole and took slaves, although there is little evidence to support this claim. It is possible that they used this rumour as an excuse to attack and control the tribes. Taking a look along the coastline of Karon makes you wonder what the first Europeans thought of this new undiscovered land.
